A Look Back at the Evolving Global Peace and Security Landscape in 2023
We reflect on the events that unfolded during the course of the last 12 months, and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities of 2024.
2023 began in the shadow of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. From attempted, and consummated, unconstitutional changes of government in some African countries, gang-fueled violence in Haiti and a devastating war in the Middle East: the year saw much upheaval and, tragically, bloodshed. Meanwhile, the global peace and security mechanisms struggled to keep up, or even to act in unison in too many cases.
Still, there was progress in consolidating or building peace in different countries and regions. Colombia, for example, saw the expansion of efforts to achieve “total peace”, with UN support. In Africa, Mozambique completed a key milestone in its peace process. And Mauritania and Liberia celebrated the holding of democratic elections.
As the year draws to a close, we took a moment to reflect on some of these key events and map out challenges and opportunities in 2024.
